Pop Culture: Love & Loathe of the week

LOVED IT

1. Shakespeare's 450th birthday!

As Klew put it, "good thing he's already dead, because 450 shots would kill him." And if you think Shakespeare is irrelevant to you, brush up.

My Shakespeare class at KU was one of my favorites, particularly the fact shared by my wise professor, "if we had a time machine to go back to the Globe and see Shakespeare originally, we would die immediately because we've been made WEAK by antiseptics." Hooray! So, let's all go watch Leo and Claire in Romeo+Juliet and cry about it.

2. Jimmy Fallon came back with new episodes

This is really all I have to contribute this week that's not cheerleading or Disney related. I have cheerleading on the BRAIN. I haven't been able to WATCH any new episodes because I've been working every night until 9 and then coming home and basically passing out from exhaustion (god I'm such a wimp), but glad to see there are new episodes on my DVR to watch once all of the madness is over. I love you Jimmy. I wish you had a 23 year old clone that I could marry.

3. Cali Smoed Dropped a stunt in MARCH

(Like I said, all cheerleading all the time this week). California All-Stars Smoed is the team that nobody will stfu about in the Small Senior Coed Worlds predictions. They're the "team to beat" in Fierce 5's division. So naturally since

1. Fierce Five or die for the rest of my life
2. I've not thought about anything except cheerleading all week,

I have been stalking all of the small coed teams on the internet. I watched nine different videos of Smoed, and they had a major stunt fall at a competition in MARCH. MARCH PEOPLE. By March you should be probably hitting all stunts all the time.  It's not the fact that they dropped the stunt that makes me happy. Like, I'm not experiencing joy from their sorrow. Cali Smoed is an AMAZING team. Don't let this post make you think anything less. It's just comforting to know that nobody is unbeatable. Nobody is perfect. Everyone has made mistakes this season. Door's wide open for anyone in the Small Senior Coed division, and I can't WAIT to watch it all go down this weekend!!!

4. We did this Buzzfeed Quiz

The subtitle is "What, like it's hard?" -Elle Woods. I love that. You go Elle Woods, you're always relevant. I got Columbia. Hoven got Dartmouth. We are pleased with our results. Bravo BuzzFeed.

5. BuzzFeed also posted this

(Again, all cheerleading and Disney-related things on my mind this week) BRAVO THANK YOU SOMEBODY FOR MAKING THIS LIST. I don't totally agree with your ranking, but I was very pleased to see you didn't rank "Let it Go" as number one. THAT MOVIE IS NOT THE SECOND COMING PEOPLE. THERE ARE OTHER DISNEY MOVIES THAT ARE JUST AS GOOD/BETTER. I loved that they established criteria and that "When You Wish Upon A Star" is number one. That is the Disney song to define all Disney songs, if you ask me. +Kerry Benn and I spent the better part of an evening creating our own rankings. The summary of our findings were 1. You have Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach on this list but NOT TARZAN? C'mon people. 2. We both don't like The Jungle Book as much as whoever made this list, and 3. We both like Hercules a lot more than whoever made this list. You can see my top 10 favorite Disney songs of all time here.

LOATHED IT

Like I said, I really have not had the time nor the energy to consume a ton of pop culture this week. Also I'm in a delightfully great mood because I'm going to Disney World to watch Cheerleading for four days. So no loathing happening over here this week. Hoven agrees, and is too busy laughing at the thought of Shakespeare ripping shots at the wheel to add anything else. (I put wheel instead of the hawk because I know Hoven wasn't voted "most likely to still be at the hawk five years after graduation" like I was. It's an acquired love, really.)

my top 10 favorite Disney songs of all time

Thanks to Buzzfeed coming out with this awesome list+Kerry Benn and I were inspired to recreate our own lists of favorite Disney songs of all time. It was really hard to pick, and my list might change from time to time, but here are my top 10. (Thanks to that awesome BuzzFeed post for providing me with links and pictures!)

10. Zero to Hero - Hercules

9. So This is Love? - Cinderella

8. Hakuna Matata - The Lion King

7. Gaston - Beauty and the Beast

6. Kiss the Girl - The Little Mermaid

5. A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes - Cinderella

4. I Just Can't Wait to be King - The Lion King

3. A Whole New World - Aladdin

2. Under the Sea - The Little Mermaid

1. When You Wish Upon a Star - Pinocchio

Go The Distance, Part of Your World, Beauty and the Beast, Be our Guest, I'll Make a Man Out of You also came close and I think should be mentioned in this list.

pop culture things that made us feel feelings this week

We've decided this is going to be a weekly column we write collaboratively. We're also going to include pop culture things we truly loved because you know, optimism. However, we acknowledge we are funnier when we're irritated...so here ya go.

POP CULTURE THAT PISSED US OFF

1. Danny and Mindy still aren't back together on The Mindy Project

DANNY TAKE YOUR OWN ADVICE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

Danny is a person who, in an effort to not ruin a great thing, is ruining everything, including that great thing. We all know this person. I always love this person. But stop stomping on my bleeding television heart, Mindy Project writers. Let me marry Danny Castellano via Mindy, I beg of thee.

2. Amy Purdy's dress on Dancing With The Stars

Okay. Dancing with the Stars was Disney themed this week. (I will get into that in the "pleasing" category below, because obviously I loved that.) So as you can imagine, all of the pairs danced to songs from Disney movies dressed as Disney Characters

Let me preface this by telling you that for about four seasons now, it has been my dream to get famous and be on DWTS JUST SO I CAN DRESS UP AS CINDERELLA AND DANCE THE WALTZ. I'm not kidding you. I've been saying this since 2011. It's the only logical path right now to becoming Cinderella, which if you know me you know that's my constant hell-bent aspiration.

So I was pretty stoked when I found out that they were going to do a waltz as Cinderella and the Prince (I've already gotten past the envy thing. It's cool you guys). Except THEY PUT AMY PURDY IN A PINK PROM DRESS THAT LOOKED NOTHING LIKE CINDERELLA. WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY. Freakin' Danica McKellar was in an exact replica Belle dress and Charlie White and his partner Sharna Burgess looked EXACTLY like Mary Poppins and Bert. WHY COULD YOU NOT PICK OUT A BLUE DRESS FOR HER, COSTUME PEOPLE!? WHY. WHY WHY WHY. Like, I'm not trying to be dramatic but I'm not rooting for Amy anymore because her dress was pink (I was never even REALLY rooting for her, but it is AMAZING to watch her dance with prosthetic legs). Len called her "a vision." NO. SHE IS NOT A VISION. SHE IS AN INACCURATE REPRESENTATION. I'm mad. I will never get over this Amy Purdy. If you're gonna do it, do it right.

3. They did a Frozen number on Dancing With The Stars and I think it's a cop out

Peta and James did a contemporary dance to "Let it Go" from Frozen (Peta was the spitting image of Elsa so thanks for nothing DWTS costume department). I mean, James is smokin' hot and nobody seems to be able to shut the hell up about Frozen but I feel like this was kind of an unfair advantage. Like the number was great and everything (it scored all 10s) but I honestly think that James is going to get a large percentage of votes from people simply because everyone is obsessed with that song. He definitely DESERVES the votes, so I'd be way more pissed off about this if some idiot got to do Frozen and was going to get votes he/she didn't deserve, but still. Come on DWTS. They get "Let it Go" while Meryl Davis, who is the best one if you ask me, isn't even a Disney character she's just a concept representation of the Jungle Book. Seems unfair to me.

4. One Direction released their new music video

I could have watched these five idiots sit in a room doing nothing but singing this song and I would have been grateful and thrilled (this is actually the Little Things video and it's great). Instead, I got a film 102 submission from an overly confident freshman who just learned a new trick on iMovie. No close up on Zayn's perfect high note, Niall's hair was a knife to the heart, needless and borderline uncomfortable animorphing that led to a bunch of unintended temporary mullets, and YEAH GUYS I GUESS I'M NOT OVER IT. (you can read more about some of this here. Also probably stay tuned for some more in-depth ranting about this courtesy of Kathryn Hoven)

5. Miley Cyrus Cancelled her Kansas City concert

Maybe this is more of a "pop culture thing that pleased us," because I didn't end up buying a ticket. +Taylor Renft really wanted me to go with her and I kept putting it off and putting it off and putting it off until we ended up deciding not to go. THANK GOD, because she cancelled 2 hours before her show due to "a bad allergic reaction to some antibiotics" ....................................................k. Then everybody was speculating and saying that it was because she took some bad drugs and she got all offended on twitter and told everyone to "read the official statement" which she posted on her Twitter account. It was an iPhone note. Like, come on Miley. It's riddled with grammatical errors. THAT IS NOT OFFICIAL AT ALL. YOU WROTE THAT. You want us to know you didn't do bad drugs/weren't doing drugs when THIS was your Twitter photo? Get real. Start to be a better role model please. Lots of little girls look up to you.

6. Coachella is still happening.

Can you name five bands/acts you genuinely love and cannot possibly wait to see and belt along to your favorite songs? Enjoy Coachella. Are you there to dress half naked, celebrity stalk, and adopt Native American garb without any awareness or context on the cultural importance of such things, because you want to be trendy and cool like a former Disney star? Have a horrible Coachella.

7. "Free Spirit" Lucy Aragon posted this video

The fact that this even exists? I'm at a loss for words. Also you can't tell me April Fool's day is ACTUALLY your favorite holiday. I do not believe that. You're telling me you feel more joy and excitement on April Fool's Day than you do on Christmas? 4th of July? Thanksgiving? Your Birthday? Nope. Don't believe it.

POP CULTURE THAT PLEASED US

1. The Mindy Project

Basically just the fact that The Mindy Project exists is a Win for every week. Seriously it's our favorite show. I laugh out loud at it weekly, and also I'm in love with Peter Prentice, who is Adam Pally's character on the show. Mindy has great fashions and the writing is just so great. We want to be you Mindy, we want to be you.

2. It was Disney Week on Dancing With The Stars

You guys, it was amazing. I watched pretty much the entire show with a huge grin on my face. The opening number was a medley of Disney songs and it was just so happy. Charlie and Sharna were Mary Poppins and Bert and that was AMAZING, and Cheryl looked just like Jasmine! Disney is happy, always. I loved this. I wish they would do this every year.

3. SCANDAL FINALE

It was on. There were shockers. There were cliffhangers. WHY IS IT OVER NOW I NEED MORE! I won't write any more about this because I feel like I can't do so without spoiling things for you HEATHENS who haven't watched it yet. Can't wait for it to come back. Scandal, you kill me. (Not literally, but you do actually kill a lot of other people)

4. JOFFREY DIED ON GAME OF THRONES LAST WEEK

I DON'T LIKE TO GLORIFY DEATHS TYPICALLY, EVEN FICTIONAL BUT THIS WAS THE BEST DEATH EVER (I just sang that like Best Song Ever because that's how great this is). SO NECESSARY IN A WORLD WHERE VOLDEMORTS ARE SEEMINGLY ALWAYS THE VICTORS. Also immediately had a crush on Jack Gleeson? Weird.

5. This exists

Unsure if this was a "this week" thing but I just found it so it is for me. Deal with it.

things we are thinking as we watch the new One Direction video

"NIALL WHAT IS YOUR HAIR WHY DO YOU LOOK LIKE JUSTIN BIEBER NO STOP PUT IT BACK."

"I'm so upset about Niall's hair klew. I'm blaming Lou who does their makeup. SHE'S GOTTA BE BLACKED OUT"

"What is happening with the collective sweater they're all wearing?"

"It's bizarre. It's real bizarre. I like the sweater aka I would wear it with leggings"

"Liam. Full beard. Why. Harry looks fab though."

"LIAM MAKES ME SO MAD KATIE LEWIS. Harry looks SO GOOD. So good. So does Zayn."

"Did he lose a bet?" -On Louis' most recent hair/look (real credit to Amy, I've been laughing at this for weeks.-KH)

"Louis has the market cornered on drowned rat"

"This video is stupid. This is "hey I wanna try some cool video effects lets see what happens."

"The grammatically correct lyric would actually be "you and me." YOU'RE BRITISH YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS." (kerry benn FTW)

"Also can we talk about how awkward it must be to walk at that camera alone with all those people watching you saying 'LOOK SEXY!'" (watch any other 1d video. ANY OTHER. "look sexy" isn't their thing. Except Zayn. ZAYN REALLY CAN.-KH)

"Like I get wanting a concept video but that looked like I could have thrown it together on iMovie in an hour." (yet again, real credit Amy. I'm currently whining about this video to five living human beings, three of which are in different states, one of which is ALL THE WAY IN ENGLAND. The video effects were useless. Also, you can't try to make a "sexy" video while kicking purple baby balls down a pier and blowing a seemingly entirely irrelevant pink balloon. -KH.)

Overall takeaways:
Video effects are dumb, Niall put your hair back, Harry is a beaut.

Not your best 1D, not your best. But we'll let this one slide.

I've been cranky all week, less inclined to let this slide, Ben Winston. I've got a lot of questions about this video and almost every single one begins with why. Watching the Kiss You video to cleanse.-KH

my letter to harrison as he graduates from high school...and is about to kick ass at worlds.

YOU GUYS. The last member of MY Fierce Five is a senior. Harrison. He's the owners' son and one of my closest friends I had on my team. He's like a little brother to me, and I have spent the entire year cheering him on and watching him do AMAZING THINGS. He's headed to Worlds for his final performance, and then going to try out for Cheerleading at the University of Kentucky. I can't even tell you how proud I am of him. The end of the year banquet was this week, and I wrote him a little note. It's really cheesy, but it brought tears to his eyes (which I am pretty pleased with. the fact that i can make a dude cry lolz.). So I figured I'd share it with you. Here's to H, and all of the awesome things that are coming up in his future.

Harrison! I like the Cubs!

I'm never a serious person, but this is probably going to be pretty cheesy. DEAL WITH IT. Don't make fun of me. I'll end you.

Here you sit. The night of the KC Cheer end of the year banquet as a graduating senior. Did you ever think you'd make it to this point? I'll tell you right now I can't believe you're  already here. I can remember VIVIDLY the little grumpy kid standing in the middle of the mach 3 mini's dance with his arms crossed around his chest REFUSING to smile. The kid with a bunch of girls dancing around him as he rolled his eyes and wished he was dead in the Candy Man dance. The kid who didn't realize it at first, but now laughs with me at the fact that I always giggled at the "Do It to me right now" dance that you did when you were on Junior coed and I was a senior.

I guess I was kind of the leader of Fierce 5. I was always the one giving the motivational speeches and trying to get everyone to be as passionate as I was about our team. I have been part of a lot of different groups throughout high school and college, and I have never loved a group or been prouder to call myself a part of a group as I have been about Fierce Five. I loved every second of my time on Fierce 5 and the choice to Super Senior was easily one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I felt like Fierce Five needed me, and I was scared if I left people would lose the passion. I want nothing more than to see Fierce Five be successful, and the thought of the team dissolving or losing its drive broke my heart. Who would be the leader when I left? Who would motivate everybody? I guess that’s besides the point. There are a lot of reasons I’m glad I chose to do one last year, but above all I’m most thankful that it allowed me to be on a team with you.

I remember the first day of Worlds practices, aka your first Worlds practice ever. You seemed so excited to work hard and were just as hell bent on kicking ass as I was.  I knew right then that Fierce Five would be in good hands even after I left. (I’m sure it always would be, I’m just a control freak.. you eased my nerves about it)

Now it brings me such joy to see what a name Fierce Five has and how AMAZING the team has become. I truly think that that is in large part to you. You are an amazing leader and teammate and it blows me away how much everyone respects you and looks up to you as the leader of this amazing team. Even the little kids who are on other teams in the gym look at you with big bug eyes while you help them get better or wish them luck on their performances. THEY LOVE YOU. And I think that is so cool. You have truly achieved MY dream of being the leader of a team of extremely passionate individuals that have a chance to do EXTREMELY WELL at Worlds. Normally id be really jealous of anyone who was given this opportunity (klew’s world, everyone else is just livin in it duh), but since it's you that gets to experience it I am nothing but overwhelmingly proud. I think you deserve every single shining moment you receive, plus thousands more.

One of the most special moments of my entire cheerleading career is when you came and gave me and RABE a huge hug after you won your paid bid to worlds. I'm sure the entire thing was a blur to you, and I’m sure klew and rabe were the LEAST of your worries at that point, but the first thing that came out of your mouth to us was "thank you. I wouldn’t still be here if it wasn’t for you guys" ...My heart is full Harrison. It’s full. I have never been so stoked for a person and I am so glad I was able to watch that happen. I get tears in my eyes every time I watch fierce 5 perform because 1. I cry at everything, 2. You guys are fkn awesome, and 3. It's so cool to watch you and how far you've come as an athlete and a performer. I LOVE that I have the ability to call myself your teammate.

So now you have one final job to do. Go out there and give the performance of a lifetime at worlds 2014. Everything's perfectly set up for you to do so well, you just have to keep working hard and KICK SO MUCH ASS. Enjoy every second on the floor. Take a moment to stop and breathe and take it in. The fact that you're at worlds. That you made it. That you worked your ass off and now you are in this beautiful place with these amazing teammates doing what you love. That’s such a special dream come true, and it’s really rare that you come across moments that special in your life, so please enjoy it no matter what.

No matter what happens, just know that I am SO INCREDIBLY PROUD to call you my teammate And my second little brother. Also ill be right there with you in a week cheering you on, as always.

Love you very much you betch. Welcome to the fierce five alumni club!
